2002 DC/Baltimore Slam Team
Hailing from Norfolk, VA, Queen Sheba has been blazing poetry venues all across the nation for the past year. Taking the DC metro area by storm, she currently holds the title as this year's Final Slam Champion for DC. Queen Sheba incorporates poetry with urban cultural influences. Her range of statement extends from the pulse of hip-hop to the cerebral, timeless riffs of pure jazz. The Queen's themes deal with everything from old slave spirituals, serious societal issues, revolution, love, life, and liberty of the human spirit. A Detroit Native now living in Norfolk VA, Queen Sheba grew up in the midst of family devastation and failed personal relationships. Each experience motivates her ever upward with a feminist voice that woman-ifests stages on the East Coast.
A returning member of both the 2000 and 2001 DC/Baltimore Poetry Slam Team, Twain is no stranger to the competitiveness of slam. This performer make you laugh, make you think, make something small seem big, something big seem small, and talk trash every chance he gets.
Two year member of the DC/Baltimore Poetry Slam Team, this poet gives story-telling a new name. Recently, Dave Lankford has launched his own website (www.davelankford.com) and released his first spoken word cd.
The newest addition to the DC/Baltimore Slam Arena, Joanna will be making her debut on this year's poetry slam team. Joanna Hoffman will be entering her Junior year of college in the fall at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is a Spanish major and Women's Studies minor and will be studying in Barcelona this fall. She is also an Advocate Against Violence working to end violence against women. Poetry is a very important part of her life, and she has been writing since the age of ten.
