Bomani Armah

Feature date(s): 01/30/2005, 08/28/2006

This is not what he does; this is who he is. Bomani “D'mite” Armah's dedication to his art form comes from one necessity; the inability to control the constant beats flowing through his blood stream and the rhymes forming in his head. For 26 years, through blood, sweat and tears Bomani has struggled to find his sound as a producer, his voice as a lyricists, and his niche as a businessman, while discovering himself as a husband, teacher and most importantly a spiritual being in a world that often appears spiritually desolate.

Bomani's uncanny skills as a lyricist come from his respect for words and the power that they wield. As an English major with a concentration in poetry at the University of Maryland, College Park, he was challenged to understand the art form of word play. Learning to combine elements from his favorite poets and song writers like Khalil Gibran, Pablo Neruda, Yusef Komonyakaa, E. Ethelbert Miller, Andre 3000, Common, Erykah Badu, India Arie, Frankie Beverly, Mos Def, Ludacris and Dead Prez he began to create his spoken-word poetry, rap lyrics and r&b songs. As Bomani likes to say, “I'm not a rapper, I'm a poet with a hip-hop style”.

Bomani has featured at prime locations all across the DC metro area including: The Black Cat, Bohemian Caverns, U-Turn, Howard University and the University of Maryland, to name a few. He released his solo debut EP in early 2004 entitled “The Hustle” and a duo-EP entitled, “That Fire”, with band mate and co-mc from his band, “Lauda”. In addition, he is featured on 3 songs on the newly released, Antitainment the third project from hip-hop band, Mello-D & the Rados , and is featured on the album's internationally released single, “Cool Witchu” ranked #3 on college charts, as of October 2004. In addition, he is a creative writing and hip-hop production instructor for Martha's Table Teen Program, an after-school program for inner city youth in NW Washington DC. Bomani's future projects include the premiere release of his hip-hop band Lauda and the third installment of Crushed I.C.E. through the Martha's Table Teen Program. Bomani will also be releasing his first book of poetry Circumlocution and as always he will be performing throughout the D.C. metropolitan area. For more info go to www.notarapper.com.
