Sekou the Misfit & Steve Connell

Feature date(s):

Sekou (tha misfit) and Steve Connell are two of the most breathtaking and inspiring artists of our time, whose dynamic presence and energy never fails to command an audience’s attention. Between them they hold Two National and Two Regional Poetry Slam Competition Championships, as well as the titles from the Word Up! National Poetry Slam and New Word Series National Poetry Slam. Their work has been featured on such diverse media outlets as ABC World News, Good Morning America, MSNBC’s Hardball, twice on HBO’s Def Poetry, Showtime’s Crossover, MTV’s Battlegrounds and World AIDS Festival, BET’s Lyric Café, Artisan Films’ Belly DVD, NIKE’s Hooptown, Oprah Winfrey’s celebration of Maya Angelou’s 75th birthday, and P-Diddy’s Annual White Party, as well as several national commercial spots and two national spoken word tours – The Underground Poets Railroad and Declare Yourself.

As a remarkably universal artist, Sekou (tha misfit) is a favorite among schools - from junior highs to universities; he performs and runs seminars at the annual Mind, Body & Soul women’s retreat in Jamaica; and he is sought as a “secret weapon” by such corporations as Microsoft and NIKE for the unique electricity his poetry brings to business presentations and events. Also an accomplished actor, voice-over artist, songwriter, and music producer, Sekou’s critically acclaimed independent CD release Afrodeezyackz/The Mumblings of a Madman has earned him an impressive array of regional and national music awards, including Best Spoken Word Album, Best Hip-Hop Album, and Best Producer from Just Plain Folks - the largest music organization in the nation.

Packed with passion and sensuality, Steve Connell’s first album, The Intimate Nature of Knife Fights, continues to win him audience and critical praise. His work is published in an Anthology on America called Why Freedom Matters, amongst such icons as Maya Angelou, Pablo Neruda, and Langston Hughes, and in an exciting new line of greeting cards designed around excerpts from his poetry. Also an accomplished actor, his feature film debut in The Beat, premiered at the prestigious 2003 Sundance Film Festival and aired on Showtime and BET, while his own hit one man show, 40 Days, received rave reviews from the LA Weekly (pick of the week) and Backstage West (Critic’s Pick) and was declared Best Solo Performance of 2005 by Entertainment Today. He was also listed in URB magazine’s “100 Faces To Watch” in 2005.

Sekou and Steve recently participated in the prestigious Ojai Playwrights Conference where they unveiled their new play, The Word Begins, directed by Robert Egan. In addition, they were invited by HBO to perform at the 12th Annual U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO. These two artists have committed themselves to infusing their fiery passion, clever wit, spell-binding words and inimitable performance style into every form of entertainment and artistry within their grasp. With projects developing in film, television, stage, music, fashion, business, and online, Sekou (tha misfit) and Steve Connell are poised to blaze the trail for the next incarnation of humankind’s oldest oral tradition: The Spoken Word.
